Historical, Architectural and Art State Museum & Sanctuary of Yelabuga

The Yelabuga State Historical-Architectural and Art Museum & Sanctuary was established in 1989. On an area of 491.5 hectares, stands a unique ensemble of sites from the Yelabuga district, from the 19th and the early 20th century. The museum-sanctuary is the guardian of 184 sites of cultural heritage, its merits are recognized nationally and internationally. Since 2009 the museum-sanctuary has been included in the Unified Federal Register of Tour Operators in Russia, since 2013: the Association of Russian Tour Operators.

Anyone who comes to Yelabuga can make an unforgettable journey into the past. One of the most mysterious and beautiful places on this excursion will be the tower of the village of Yelabuga ("Devil's Tower"). For more than a thousand years, it looms over like a lone watchman over the steep bank of the Kama river.

The Kazanskaya, Spasskaya, Naberezhnaya, Bolshaya Pokrovskaya and Gassara streets, which make up the historical neighbourhood of the museums. Each building is an example of commercial buildings from the second half of the XIX century, are of great artistic value and scientific interest. The cult buildings of Yelabuga are striking in their beauty and grandeur: the Spasskaya Cathedral, the Church of St. Nicholas and the Intercession or the Cathedral Mosque "Djamig".

The city is rich in historical figures. The great Russian landscape artist Ivan I. Shishkin, the world-famous psychiatrist Vladimir M. Bekhterev, the cavalry lady Nadezha A. Durova. The poet Marina I. Tsvetaeva spent the last days of her life in Yelabuga while the future Marshal of the Soviet Union L.A. Govorov graduated from the local school...
