Tsar Peter I ruled Bulgaria between 927 and 969. His father, Tsar Simeon, left him a vast but war-torn country stretching from the Carpathians to Corinth and from the Black Sea to the Adriatic. Tsar Peter I remained in history for his peacekeeping and care given to the Church, for which he was canonised as a saint. His reign is the longest in Bulgarian medieval history, but also accompanied by many difficulties due to internal strife, the emergence of heresies and various upheavals in the country.


The first Bulgarian national saint, Ivan of Rila, lived During his reign.
