SECOND BULGARIAN KINGDOM
The second Bulgarian state (1185-1396), founded by the Assen and Peter brothers after the Byzantine rule (1018-1186), is the capital of Turnovgrad.
The start of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom was in 1185 after the successful rebellion of Asen and Peter against the Byzantine power. In this way the Bulgarian autonomy was restored first in the lands between Danube and the Balkan with a capital Tarnovo and later on it gradually also reached wide territories of the First Bulgarian Kingdom. These processes were paralleled with political development and a cultural bloom. The Art School in Tarnovo continued the traditions of the old Bulgarian culture. The Church in Tarnovo gained a big authority in the East. The processing of metals began. Building and architecture made progress. The number of castles in the Bulgarian lands reached over 2000 while additionally during their construction a rule of fast communication between them was followed, including posts for visual signals. With such a system the Bulgarian defense was some of the most advanced in Europe at the time. The first Bulgarian coins were made – golden, silver and copper – and the start of the trading of goods with Dubrovnik and the Italian republics was signaled. In the cases of isolated outside attacks and wars with neighbors the Second Bulgarian Kingdom established itself as a leading military power in Eastern Europe for a period of around 2 centuries. The inner turmoils and fights for power, however, caused the country to be separated in two – the Vidin Kingdom and the Tarnovo Kingdom. With this lack of consolidation the invasion of the ottoman Turks in Balkans during the 14th century led to the fall of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom in 1396.
